Ryan Sproul, who played under the name Ruian Sipulaoer while representing Team China, continues a unique and wide-ranging hockey career with his latest move to Slovakia. The 32-year-old defenceman has signed a one-year deal in Slovakia with HK Poprad, adding another chapter to a résumé that includes the NHL, KHL, and Olympic hockey with Team China.

Sproul is one of the few players in hockey history to seamlessly blend top-tier North American experience with a key role in the rise of Chinese international hockey – a project that culminated in China’s participation at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The Making of Ruian Sipulaoer

Born in Canada, Sproul played junior hockey with the Soo Greyhounds (OHL) before being drafted 55th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2011. He played 44 NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers, while spending most of his time in the AHL.

In 2019, Sproul made a move that would reshape his identity on the ice: he joined Kunlun Red Star, China’s KHL club, becoming a fixture over five seasons. He logged 232 KHL games, scored 24 goals, and recorded 83 points, mostly quarterbacking the power play. His strong skating and heavy shot made him one of Kunlun’s most reliable blue-liners during a volatile period in the club’s history.

Naturalized as Ruian Sipulaoer, Sproul was selected to represent Team China at the 2022 Winter Olympics, skating on home ice against global powers. Among the 15 naturalized players on China’s Olympic roster, Sproul was one of only four without Chinese roots (alongside Jeremy Smith, Jake Chelios, and Denis Osipov).

Wearing the red and yellow, Sproul played in 13 international games for China, tallying 1 goal and 9 assists. In addition to the Olympics, he competed at:

  • 🥇 2022 IIHF World Championship Division 2A (Gold)
  • 🥉 2023 IIHF World Championship Division 1B (Bronze)

Exit from China’s National Program

Following the 2023 shift in policy by the Chinese Ice Hockey Association, which ended the practice of fielding naturalized players, Sproul – like many of his former teammates – was removed from Chinas national team pipeline. His story, however, remains one of the most visible examples of China’s ambitious (if temporary) attempt to build international competitiveness through heritage and talent recruitment.

After Ethan Werek, Another Former China International Lands in Slovakia

While Sproul’s move to Slovakia’s Extraliga may seem unusual, he’s not the first Chinese Olympian to suit up in the league. Ethan Werek, another former Kunlun standout, played seven games for HC Slovan Bratislava in the 2023–24 season, continuing the quiet dispersal of China’s Olympic-era alumni across the global hockey map.

From Kunlun and Beijing 2022 to the Tatras: A rare path through world hockey

Whether he’s been wearing the jersey of the Detroit Red Wings, Kunlun Red Star, or Team China, Ryan Sproul’s career has taken him across leagues, borders, and hockey cultures. After five seasons in the KHL and a recent stint with Selber Wölfe in Germany’s DEL2, he continues to carve out a path defined not by headlines, but by endurance, reinvention, and a passport full of hockey stamps.
