Thailand’s rise as a regional ice hockey power has been shaped by more than infrastructure, development programs, and international competition. One of the most distinctive and symbolic elements of this growth has been the visible and active support of Queen Suthida, whose personal passion for sport has helped elevate ice hockey’s profile in a country where the game was once considered a curiosity.
In recent years, Thailand has became the first Southeast Asian nation to enter the IIHF World Championship system across all categories – senior men’s, U20, and U18 – cementing its position as the region’s undisputed ice hockey leader.
Who Is Queen Suthida of Thailand?
Queen Suthida of Thailand was born Suthida Tidjai on 3 June 1978. She studied communication arts at Assumption University in Bangkok and began her professional life as a flight attendant.
Her path changed after she joined the Thai military, where she rose rapidly to the rank of general and became part of the royal security structure, eventually serving in the inner circle of King Maha Vajiralongkorn. She married the king in May 2019 and was formally proclaimed Queen of Thailand on 1 May 2019, shortly before the king’s coronation.
Beyond her official duties, Queen Suthida is widely known as a dedicated sports enthusiast. She actively participates in ice hockey, sailing, cycling, and endurance running, embodying a hands-on approach to physical activity that is rare at the highest levels of state leadership. (1)
Queen Suthida of Thailand and Ice Hockey: On the Ice, Not Just in the Stands
Queen Suthida’s involvement in ice hockey goes far beyond ceremonial appearances. In October 2023, she took part in activities on the ice during the opening of the new ice hockey arena in Chiang Mai, skating alongside athletes and underscoring her personal connection to the sport. (2)
That connection became even more tangible in October 2024, when she joined the Thai national team on the ice during a historic Thailand–China ice hockey friendly match, the first meeting between the two countries in the sport.
The game, held at the Thailand International Ice Hockey Arena in Bangkok, ended in a 6–6 draw, with Queen Suthida lining up at center on the first forward line and scoring a goal. The match formed part of broader commemorations tied to the King’s birthday and 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, while also serving as a platform for strengthening sporting and cultural ties between the two nations. Leadership Beyond the Rink
Her engagement with ice hockey has also taken on an international dimension. During the same occasion, Queen Suthida was appointed the first IIHF Women’s Global Ambassador, a landmark step for both Thailand and the wider Asian hockey community. (7)
As IIHF President Luc Tardif stated at the time: (8)
In July 2025, Queen Suthida personally presented the trophy to the champions of the Thailand Invitation Ice Hockey Championship 2025 at the Thailand International Ice Hockey Arena in Bangkok. Moments like this underline her alignment with Thailand’s broader efforts to expand participation in ice hockey and to position the country as a regional hub for the sport. (9)
A Visible Presence in Thailand’s Sporting Culture
Queen Suthida’s sporting commitment extends well beyond hockey. In November 2025, she completed the 21 km half marathon at the Amazing Thailand Marathon in Bangkok, finishing in just over two hours and thirteen minutes, a testament to her endurance training.
She is also set to personally compete at the SEA Games in the keelboat rowing discipline, further reinforcing her identity as an active athlete rather than a distant patron. (10)
At the 2025 SEA Games, she played a prominent role during the opening ceremony at Rajamangala Stadium, leading Thailand’s athletes onto the field in front of a packed crowd. Her involvement symbolized the close link between national identity, sport, and modern Thai leadership. (11)
Symbolism That Resonates Beyond Results
Her journey – from flight attendant to military officer to queen – mirrors, in many ways, Thai ice hockey’s own rise. What began with modest foundations has evolved into a structured, internationally connected program, increasingly visible both at home and abroad.
Under Queen Suthida’s watchful and active presence, ice hockey has become a modest yet increasingly visible part of Thailand’s sporting landscape, carrying symbolism that extends far beyond the rink.
