The United States once again brought a very young team this year, but one packed with top talent – almost the entire roster is made up of NHL players, including stars like Zach Werenski, Tage Thompson, and Clayton Keller. Facing this star-studded arsenal was goaltender Sergei Kudryavtsev, making his top division World Championship debut at the age of 30.

Kazakhstan Show Signs of Life After Czech Blowout

Oleg Bolyakin’s team looked to repair their image after a crushing loss to the Czechs and got off to a solid start, keeping a clean sheet through the first period. In fact, Kazakhstan managed to maintain a hopeful scoreless tie well into the middle of the game.

USA Break Through in Second Period Barrage

The scoring opened in the 27th minute with Frank Nazar, a 21-year-old Chicago Blackhawks prospect. From that point on, the floodgates opened for the Americans – Jackson Lacombe, Tage Thompson, Matty Beniers, and Michael Kesselring all found the net in quick succession. Kazakhstan lost the period 0–5, a particularly harsh outcome for debuting goaltender Kudryavtsev.

Pavlenko Steps In to Stop the Bleeding

Kazakhstan head coach Oleg Bolyakin responded with a goalie change, calling on Mr. Reliable, Maxim Pavlenko, to calm the storm between the pipes. He allowed just one goal – a 46th-minute strike from star D-man Zach Werenski.

Volkov’s Solo Effort Saves Kazakh Pride

The Americans were closing out the game on a power play and looked likely to extend their lead, but it was Kazakhstan who struck instead – Vladimir Volkov read the play, snatched the puck in his own zone and converted a breakaway chance, albeit with a bit of luck. It was the second goal of the tournament for the Arlan Kokshetau forward, a champion in the Kazakh league this year.

Kazakhstan Fall 1–6, Face Do-or-Die Battle Against Switzerland

Kazakhstan dropped their penultimate game at the World Championship with a 1–6 loss and failed to gain any ground in the relegation battle. It’s a Herculean task for Oleg Bolyakin’s squad, but hope dies last.
