Canadian head coach Jarrod Skalde brought an even younger roster to Beijing than last year – the oldest player on the team is just 25. From last season’s silver-medal squad, eight players return, and ten members of the team also appeared at the most recent World Championship Division 1A .
Only five players are true debutants at an event of this level, showing that while the roster is youthful, most of them already have experience in demanding international games.
Japan’s Ice Hockey Roster Shifts as Skalde Tests New Options
It’s clear that Skalde sees this tournament primarily as a chance to evaluate new candidates for the senior national team. As a result, several major stars are absent, including Japan’s biggest name Yushiroh Hirano (DEL2) and Kenta Isogai (ECHL). The coaching staff also left at home many of ALIH’s top performers such as Shogo Nakajima, Tohi Kobayashi, Taiga Irikura, Sota Isogai, Makuru Furuhashi, and others.
ALIHL Core Leads the Lineup, With Help From Abroad
The largest share of the roster – 14 players – comes from the Asia League Ice Hockey (ALIH). Skalde also brought up four players from Japan’s school leagues, while the remaining group is made up of international call-ups: Yu Sato from the VHL, Ray Murakami from the NCAA, Fuji Suzuki from the NAHL, and BCHL duo Kazumo Sasaki and Taisetsu Ushio.
Otsuka Takes Over the Net
In goal, Japan’s clear No. 1 will be Issa Otsuka. At the last World Championship, the talented netminder surprised many by earning the starting role ahead of veteran Yuta Narisawa. This season with the Nikko Ice Bucks, Otsuka has continued to rise, posting stronger numbers than his experienced teammate – former NHL goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji.
NCAA’s Murakami Makes His Senior Debut
For the first time, 22-year-old Ray Murakami will wear Japan’s senior jersey. Murakami brings NCAA experience and will look to apply his North American habits within the national team.
Among the expected leaders is Koki Yoneyama, who has already represented Japan at six major international events across both world and Asian competitions. At the most recent Asian Winter Games, he even led the team in scoring.
The Team’s Biggest Star Arrives With KHL Credentials
The biggest star of the squad is 23-year-old Yu Sato, who can boast a full season in the Kontinental Hockey League. He currently plays in the VHL and, despite a quieter year so far, he now has a chance to regain momentum in the national team.
Supporting Sato will be Teruto Nakajima, who at just 23 has already become an irreplaceable figure in Japan’s lineup. Nakajima also brings valuable international experience from last season, when he played in Europe in the AlpsHL.
Another key contributor is Chikara Hanzawa, who somewhat unusually plays in ALIH for the Korean club HL Anyang. Earlier in his career, he spent time in the NCAA and USHL, adding further versatility and experience to the roster.
Ambitions Remain High Despite the Youth Movement
Even with a younger team, Japan will undoubtedly aim to challenge Asia’s top hockey power and the reigning continental champion, Kazakhstan.
